The Mayor of Havering Mr Brian Eagling attended Harold Hill Bowls Club on 29th of March for the opening of Phase 5.

The club has been undergoing a series of renovations with the Grand Opening taking place on the 29th April 2016 at 3pm with many local dignitaries attending.

Mel St Pier, Secretary said: “When I came along the club was on the decline, once the season ended not much took place until the following May.”

The renovations have made the club much bigger to welcome new members and boasts a good selection of activities including many social functions.

Mr St Pier has been with the club for eight years first as the treasurer, said: “I am very pleased with how the club has developed, it’s a happy place to be.”

Renovations have been funded by Harold Wood Funeral Services and Violia and the National Lottery.

The members take part in fundraising events to raise money for the  club but recently raised around £600 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The eco friendly club installed 32 solar panels giving off 8.23kw enabling the club to be totally self sufficient with any energy not being used by the club going back into the grid.

Mr St Pier said: “The sun comes out we put the washing on.”

Barry Defern, Assistant Treasure said: “The club maybe the first 100% eco friendly bowls club in the UK.”

The members of the club installed the kitchen making a saving of £5000.

The social membership costs just £25 per year, there is a licensed bar and regular events.

The club play in the Essex and Community leagues and have an in house competition in July.
