On Saturday 8 November, Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust will officially transition from paper-based patient records to a new Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system — marking the end of its reliance on paper documentation and bringing it in line with other acute trusts across the capital.
The move is expected to significantly improve patient safety, reduce clinical errors, and streamline workflows by allowing healthcare professionals to access vital patient information — such as medications, test results, and allergies — from a single secure digital record. This change is designed to free up clinician time and enhance the quality of care.
While the launch represents a major step forward in modernising healthcare delivery, the trust has warned of potential disruptions during the initial rollout period. Patients visiting A&E and outpatient departments may experience longer wait times as staff adapt to the new system. Those with non-urgent health concerns are being encouraged to consider alternative services such as GPs, pharmacists, or walk-in centres.
Despite the anticipated challenges, the trust is confident that the long-term benefits of the EPR system will outweigh the short-term inconvenience. The new system will also enable seamless sharing of patient records across hospitals in North East London, improving continuity of care for patients seen at multiple sites.
Support for the transition is being provided by neighbouring Barts Health NHS Trust, which has already implemented its own EPR system. This collaboration means that clinicians across both trusts will be able to access shared patient records, further enhancing integrated care across the region.
Visitors to the hospital in the weeks following the launch are advised to allow extra time for appointments and to be patient as staff adjust to the new digital processes.
