Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that the major infrastructure works at Gallows Corner junction will now be completed by spring 2026 — extending the timeline for reopening the key local junction connecting the A12, A127 and local roads in Romford
The flyover, which has been closed since June 2025 for essential renewal and strengthening works, the junction remains closed to all vehicle traffic except emergency services, black cabs, and TfL buses.
Coordinated Works and Unforeseen Delays
To minimise disruption, TfL has coordinated its efforts with Essex & Suffolk Water (ESW), who are replacing an ageing water main in the same area. However, unforeseen ground conditions around the water main have delayed both ESW’s work and aspects of the flyover renewal.
TfL has acknowledged the frustration this extended timeline may cause and assured residents and road users that it is working closely with all partners to complete the project as efficiently as possible. More details on the reopening schedule are expected early next year, and regular updates are available on TfL’s dedicated project webpage.
Havering Council Responds
Following TfL’s announcement, Havering Council Leader, Councillor Ray Morgon, expressed both relief and disappointment.
“After months of uncertainty, it is encouraging to finally have a clearer sense of when this vital junction will reopen to our community,” said Cllr Morgon. “However, I must express my deep disappointment that the delays mean Gallows Corner will not be reopened in time for Christmas.”
He highlighted the significant impact the closure has had on residents, businesses, schools, emergency services, and public transport, as well as delays to the Council’s wider highways programmes. The Council has been pressing TfL and ESW for a firm completion date and improved communication, and will continue to hold all parties accountable to ensure the new timeline is honoured.
“We are also pushing for some form of compensation for businesses and residents,” Cllr Morgon added. “Gallows Corner is a critical artery for Havering and East London. Its renewal is essential for the safety and reliability of our road network, and for the prosperity of our community.”
Travel Advice
By Spring 2026 – TfL have confirmed plan to reopen the flyover first to general traffic, with the roundabout and surrounding roads reopening weeks after.
Until then, during the ongoing closure road users are reminded:
- Avoid travelling through Gallows Corner in any direction
- Note that there is no access to/from the A127 Southend Arterial Road, and from A12 Colchester Road to the A12 Eastern Avenue or the A118 Main Road
- Use local diversion routes
- Allow extra time for journeys and travel outside peak hours where possible
- Consider using buses for local travel
- For longer journeys, use the M25 for the M11 or A13
TfL urges all road users to check before they travel and plan ahead to avoid unnecessary delays.
