Following nearly a year of closures, Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that parts of the Gallows Corner junction will officially reopen this weekend.

Starting Sunday, May 10, local drivers will see significant changes to the current traffic restrictions. While Essex & Suffolk Water (ESW) continues essential work on the water system, key sections of the road network are being brought back into service to ease local congestion.

What is Reopening?

From Sunday, the following routes will be accessible to general traffic:

  • The Flyover Eastbound Only (Towards Southend): Reopening to allow travel between the A12 and the A127.

  • A12 Northbound (Toward Brentwood / Essex): Colchester Road from the roundabout will reopen to all traffic.
  • Straight Road: Fully reopened in both directions.

  • Main Road: Fully reopened in both directions.

Ongoing Restrictions

To allow water-main works and final testing to be completed safely, some closures remain in place:

  • The Flyover Westbound (Towards London): Will remain closed; diversions remain in place.

  • A12 Southbound (Westbound): Will remain restricted to buses only from Bryant Avenue to the Roundabout.

  • No Access: There will still be no access from the A12 Eastern Avenue to / from the roundabout, all vehicles will be forced over the flyover. Additionally there will be No access to / from the A127 Southend Arterial from the roundabout.

Project Updates and Safety

Scott Haxton, TfL’s director of capital delivery, noted that extensive technical and safety checks have been completed to allow this partial reopening.

“We know how frustrating this situation continues to be for local residents, businesses, and road users. We remain focused on fully reopening the road network and supporting ESW to complete final testing and commissioning works as quickly and safely as possible.”

The project, which saw delays push the completion date from late 2025 into Spring 2026, is now entering its final phases. Hornchurch and Upminster MP Julia Lopez also shared the update this evening, welcoming the news that traffic flow will begin to improve for the community starting this Sunday.

Note to Motorists: Please continue to follow all posted diversion signs and allow extra time for your journey while the remaining westbound and water-main works are completed.
