A new, confidential text messaging service is launching across north east London, offering a vital alternative for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.

Starting Monday 11 May 2026, residents will be able to text 07860 009642 to connect directly with the NHS 111, Option 2 mental health support team. The service will be fully operational for urgent support requests from Thursday 14 May 2026.

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) and the North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT). By introducing a text-based option, the trusts aim to modernise crisis support and ensure help is accessible to those who may struggle to reach out via a traditional phone call.

How the Service Works

Getting help is designed to be as straightforward as possible, removing barriers for people in distress:

  • To access support: Text “help” to 07860 009642.

  • No words? No problem: If you cannot find the right words, you can send a blank message or type anything to initiate contact.

  • The response: A dedicated member of the NHS 111, Option 2 team will respond as quickly as possible to provide immediate psychological support and signpost to relevant local services.

Breaking Down Barriers to Care

The text service is available to people of all ages and was designed specifically for individuals who prefer messaging over speaking on the phone.

“For many people in a crisis, speaking out loud can feel too difficult,” the trusts highlighted. “Others may be in a situation where they do not want to be overheard making a confidential phone call. This service ensures they can still access urgent support safely and discreetly.”

By expanding access beyond the standard phone line, ELFT and NELFT are ensuring that confidential, compassionate mental health care is always within reach, no matter how someone chooses to communicate.
