This summer, Bedrock Radio’s Asha made a special trip down to The Institute in Braintree – and what a find it turned out to be!
Tucked away in the heart of the town at Bocking End, this Grade II listed building is truly a hidden gem and Braintree’s only dedicated theatre venue. Far more than just a performance space, it stands as an inclusive hub that welcomes everyone and serves the whole community.
Asha sat down with directors Lewis Codling and Jim Hollands to uncover what makes The Institute so special. The pair took the reins in 2023 with a clear vision: to renovate, revitalise and transform the historic venue into a thriving destination for high-quality shows, events and community activities. They explained how the theatre meets a wide range of local needs – from music and comedy nights to tribute acts, family shows, relaxed performances and more – creating a space that feels open and accessible to all ages and backgrounds. It’s the kind of place where locals can gather, support grassroots talent and enjoy live entertainment right on their doorstep.
The building itself carries a rich history. Built in the 1860s as a Literary and Mechanics’ Institution (on the site of an earlier theatre space dating back to the mid-18th century), it has long been a community landmark. Today it continues that tradition, but its future depends on local support. Lewis and Jim spoke about exciting projects still to come – further restorations, improved facilities and an even fuller programme of events – all of which rely on the people of Braintree helping to sustain this cherished listed building.

Not to be outdone, Asha herself stepped up to the challenge – declaring she’d be ready and willing if the opportunity ever arose to take on the King of Pop! True to form, Asha also presented the pair with a limited-edition gift. Jim was quick to note with a smile, “Asha from Bedrock is supporting local business” – a lovely moment that perfectly captured the spirit of community collaboration. The Institute has already hosted sell-out shows, tribute acts, comedy and a growing mix of events that bring people into the town centre and support nearby businesses. Under Lewis and Jim’s stewardship, the venue has seen practical improvements including a new sound system, refreshed spaces and a welcoming bar area, all while preserving its historic character. Their goal is clear: to make The Institute a true hub for arts and culture in the area.
