Havering Council is taking action at the lake in Langtons Gardens, Hornchurch, as prolonged dry weather and high temperatures continue to put pressure on water levels.

The lake relies entirely on groundwater and surface run-off, with no natural water supply such as a spring or stream. Falling levels and continued evaporation have created increasingly difficult conditions for wildlife.

Council officials are working with partners to explore ways of increasing the amount of water in the lake and say the situation is being closely monitored.

Fish to be safely removed

Following advice from the Environment Agency, contractors are due to attend Langtons Gardens in Hornchurch to safely remove fish from the lake while the difficult conditions continue.

Councillor Keith Prince AM, Leader of Havering Council, said the authority understood residents’ concerns about the lake and its wildlife.

He said the removal was being carried out following Environment Agency guidance to protect the fish as safely as possible during the challenging weather conditions.
